Lean Production System (LPS) is a production method developed in the United States based on Toyota Motor Corporation's "Toyota Production System (TPS)" and adapted to the conditions in the United States. In Taiwan, it is called "Lean Production System", while in mainland China, it is called "Lean Manufacturing System".

There are differences between Eastern and Western philosophical thinking. TPS emphasizes the complete elimination of waste, while LPS takes a different approach from the perspective of value stream. The two are not contradictory and have a complementary effect. In the face of an era of labor shortage, high costs, diverse and small-batch products with short lifespans, lean production is the only way.

The concept of "lean" has been widely applied to fields such as innovation and development, marketing, and logistics, and is further integrated with the development of IT technology, moving towards an integrated approach similar to Industry 4.0. Without the fundamental mindset of leanness, Industry 4.0 is like a soulless machine.

Just-in-Time (JIT) and Jidoka production require many supporting conditions, such as zero defects, zero breakdowns, and zero delays. Most companies can pull off streamlined production lines, which are profitable, but fall far short of top-tier standards. The reasons are numerous, traceable to business philosophy, corporate culture, and overall management systems. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular, often lack significant influence over suppliers and must adjust their methods accordingly, rather than simply copying others.

 

Effectively respond to changes in demand with many varieties and small quantities, shorten production lead time, reduce inventory and various wastes, and achieve just-in-time and automated production.
